Middle Earth Weekend

twe08logmc.jpgMake your way to Middle Earth!

Plans are well underway for the ninth weekend celebrating the work of JRR Tolkien on the 17th and 18th of May 2008 in Birmingham at Sarehole Mill Recreation Ground, Cole Bank Road, Hall Green. This unique event will be open between 11.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. each day. You’ll notice that publicity for this year describes this event as:

The Middle Earth Weekend

Middle Earth means the world that lies between heaven and hell, i.e. the world of mortals. The weekend will include a wealth of interest for devotees of Tolkien’s work and a wide range of events, displays and activities for all people of any age from Middle Earth, who appreciate a festival with a distinctly ‘old fashioned’ air about it. Craft workshops, a historical rope maker, flint knappers and falconry displays as well as the Viking Re-enactment Society and the Bowmen of Swanshurst will be amongst those on hand to entertain and inform visitors. Historic Sarehole Mill (and its tea room!) will be fully open.

The theme for this year’s event is Myths and Monsters and there will be dragons patrolling the field. Using puppets and live performances, Hall Green based Shire Productions will present extracts from the heroic Anglo Saxon poem Beowulf in the setting of nearby Moseley Bog - where monsters will be no doubt be lurking with intent! The bus rides to Tolkien related points of interest in Birmingham, guided walks in The Shire Country Park and the drama performances will need booking - so arrive early to take advantage of all that’s on offer during the weekend.
