Michael Wilkes was returned to represent Hall Green ward on Birmingham City Council in the local elections on May 1st. “I am delighted to have this further opportunity to work for Hall Green and represent our interests on the Council for the next four years,” said Michael. “I would like to express my profound thanks to my wife Vivienne, my son David and tireless colleagues particularly Councillor Jackie Hawthorn and Councillor Paula Smith for their unstinting support. Full credit also goes to key Focus team members, especially Phil Wagg, Paul Smith and Peter Lockyer. Our team of regular volunteer helpers and Focus deliverers in Hall Green (some of whom have been with us for twenty years) also deserve the highest praise.”
“All of our campaigns are team efforts and this was no exception,” Michael continued. “I would also like to express my sincere thanks to everyone in Hall Green who voted for me. I very much look forward to continuing to work as a Birmingham City Councillor with my colleagues both for and on behalf of the residents of Hall Green in the future.” The election results for Hall Green ward are shown in the first of our bar charts.
Michael received a total of 3,027 votes giving the Liberal Democrats in Hall Green an increased majority of 737 over the Conservatives (2,290 votes) and 1,904 ahead of Labour (1,123 votes) with the other parties totalling 584 votes.
Across the new Hall Green Constituency (which is made up of Hall Green, Springfield, Moseley and Kings Heath and Sparkbrook council wards) Liberal Democrats topped the poll with a total of 8,465 votes, Labour finished in second place with 8,262 votes, Respect were third with 5,240 votes, the Conservatives finished fourth with 4,064 votes and other parties totalled 2,161 votes. The results are displayed in the second of our charts.
“This means that the realistic choice for the next Member of Parliament to represent Hall Green constituency is between the Liberal Democrats and Labour,” commented Lib-Dem Springfield Councillor Jerry Evans who works closely with Hall Green’s Focus team. “And Liberal Democrats have an overall majority of councillors (eight out of a total of twelve members) on the Hall Green Constituency Committee in the City Council’s devolved governance arrangements”.
In the City of Birmingham as a whole, the Liberal Democrats retained their full existing complement of councillors and so remain with 32 seats on the City Council. at the national level, the Liberal Democrats finished ahead of Labour in the popular vote and achieved a net increase of 34 councillors and gained one additional council under Liberal Democrat control. “Overall therefore, this was a pleasing and successful performance by the lib-Dems,” said Councillor Michael Wilkes “and now it’s everyone down to work for the future of our area!”
